High-level probe into Muzaffarpur violence

The Bihar government would order a high level probe into the mob violence leading to imposition of curfew in Muzaffarpur and identify the gang which abducted and killed five-year-old Gautam Kumar, president of the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal Laloo Prasad Yadav said on Thursday.

Violence erupted when locals, agitated over Gautam's abduction and subsequent killing on Tuesday night, took to the streets.

The state government had taken serious note of the incident and shifted the DIG, SP and Deputy SP of Muzaffarpur district, Yadav told reporters in Patna.

He said the state government would take stringent punitive action against officials found guilty of firing and lapses on their part leading to the abduction and subsequent murder of Gautam, the son of a local bank official.

The officials posted in Muzaffarpur had been asked to maintain restraint as all possible efforts were being made to defuse the situation, the RJD chief said.

Yadav said the civil surgeon of Muzaffarpur and doctors at Sadar Hospital had caused confusion by giving misleading autopsy reports about the boy's age.

He said seven persons had fallen to police bullets in Muzaffarpur after violence broke out in protest against the gruesome killing of Gautam.

However, official reports reaching Patna said the toll had increased to eight with the recovery of four bodies on Thursday even as curfew was extended to the entire town.

Five of the victims were identified as Saroj Kumar, Amarnath, Rajesh, Tinku and Samata Party worker Mritunjay Kumar.

Twelve persons wounded in the police firing were in critical condition in nursing homes, the sources said.

New DIG (Tirhut Range) S K Bhardwaj, who replaced Sridhar Sharma after the incident on Wednesday, said the curfew would be in force till the situation improved and only emergency services would be allowed.

Train services on the Muzaffarpur-Samastipur, Muzaffarpur-Raxaul and Muzaffarpur-Hajipur sections remained affected for the second day.
