Four killed in police
firing in Muzaffarpur

Soroor Ahmed in Patna

Four persons were killed in Muzaffarpur in Bihar on Wednesday afternoon when police opened fire on a crowd protesting against the kidnapping and subsequent killing of a five-year-old boy.

A large crowd took to the streets on Tuesday night following the recovery of the body of Gautam, son of a Punjab National Bank employee.

Gautam was kidnapped while on his way to the school last week. His two sisters accompanying him were, however, spared.

The situation turned violent on Wednesday afternoon as angry protestors set on fire the Saraiyagunj police outpost and an office of the Bihar State Electricity Board located in the Tilak Maidan area of the town, leading to the police firing.

An indefinite curfew has been imposed in the town.

Those killed in the police firing have not yet been identified.

Leader of the Opposition Sushil Kumar Modi has demanded the resignation of the superintendent of police.
