Sonia is a citizen of India: SC

Setting to rest a political controversy, the Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that Congress president Sonia Gandhi "is a citizen of India" and upheld her election to the Lok Sabha from Amethi.

"It must be held that Sonia Gandhi by virtue of the certificate granted to her under Section 5 (1) (c) of the Citizenship Act, which certificate has not been cancelled, withdrawn or anulled till date, is a citizen of India," a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice A S Anand, Justice R C Lahoti and Justice Doraiswamy Raju said.

Two petitions challenging Gandhi's election from Amethi constituency in 1999 on the ground that her citizenship of the country was acquired in doubtful circumstances were dismissed.
