Bihar flood situation worsens

The flood situation on Tuesday further worsened in Bihar's Gopalganj and east and west Champaran districts following heavy discharge of water in the turbulent Gandak river with incessant rains in its upstream in Nepal.

About 250,000 cusecs were being regularly released at the Valmiki Nagar barrage in the Gandak due to continuous inflow from Nepal, official sources said.

Incessant rains had led to floods in several rivers of Himalayan origin, including the Oraj, Bangrim Pasaha and Tilawe, inundating vast countryside areas in east and west Champaran districts, the sources said.

According to State Relief and Rehabilitation Department sources, 36 people were reported to have been killed in the current spell of floods in Gopalganj, east and west Champaran, Madhubani, Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur districts.

Road communication had been disrupted between Bettiah-Narkatiaganj, Bettiah-Bagaha and Lauriya-Ramnagar, with water flooding roads at several places.

In Gopalganj, the home district of Chief Minister Rabri Devi, army boats had been engaged to shift marooned people.

Central Water Commission sources said all major rivers like the Ganga, Kosi, Gandak, Bagmati and Burhi Gandak were still in spate and had crossed the danger level at many places.
