Expert team air-dashes to ONGC fire mishap site

An expert fire-fighting team from Bombay air-dashed to the ONGC well No 345 near Naranvi village in the Gandha oilfield in Gujarat, to put out a fire that broke out on Monday, Bharuch Deputy Superintendent of Police Manoj Antani said in Baroda on Wednesday.

"The expert team will launch an operation any time on Wednesday night or Thursday," he said adding, the operation would not cause any damage to the environment and surrounding wells in the area.

At present, about 12 fire tenders are engaged in fire-fighting operation, according to ONGC sources.

The mishap had occurred when three unauthorised oil tankers were trying to pilferage oil from an oil well, allegedly in connivance with ONGC staff members.

Police had registered a case against seven persons, including an ONGC official, under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Indian Petroleum Pipe Line Act.
