Abu Salem case: CBI denies any goof up

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Central Bureau of investigation has officially denied that there was any goof up, which led to the premature release of the notorious gangster Abu Salem.

The agency also clarified that Salem was not under the custody of the UAE police at any point of time last week.

"We have received an official communication from the Interpol in UAE that Abu Salem was not arrested in the Emirates," S M Khan, official spokesman for CBI told rediff.com on Monday.

"There is no question of any goof up on behalf of the CBI," he added.

According to Khan, A K Gupta, deputy inspector general incharge of Interpol section in the CBI, received a message to this effect on Friday evening from his counterpart in the UAE police.

Maharashtra chief minister and deputy chief minister went on record that they have been told by UAE police that they had arrested a man wanted by the Indian police.

The UAE cops had also reportedly asked for documents for identification of the arrested person to confirm whether or not the man under detention was the notorious gangster Abu Salem.

In fact the Maharshtra police had also announced that a team of police officers would be leaving for Sharjah to give the documents to the UAE government about Abu Salem and start the process of extradition to bring him to India.

Salem is wanted in a number of cases including the serial bomb blasts in Mumbai in 1993.
