The outlawed People's War Group set off a landmine blast, killing a police constable in the coastal district of Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday evening.
According to state police sources, the incident occurred when a special police party launched combing operations in Bhamini area following a 'famine raid' on a rice mill at Nulakajodi village on Andhra Pradesh-Orissa border on October 26.
The 30-member police party was combing the hilly area near Nadimguda when the blast occurred.
Constable M V Ramana (aged 26 years) from Etcherla, died on the spot.
Two others, including a civilian Alladi Appa Rao who was guiding the police party, sustained serious injuries in the incident. Other policemen escaped unhurt.
Immediately after the blast, the police party dispersed and the policemen regrouped later and found Ramana dead.
It was the first time that a landmine blast was triggered by Naxalites to attack the policemen in Srikakulam district. Nadimguda comes under Gunupur police station limits of Orissa.
Senior police officials rushed to the area on receipt of information about the incident.
