Lt Gen Sarvjit Chahal is named new DGMO

Lieutenant General Sarvjit Singh Chahal has been appointed director general of military operations at Army Headquarters in New Delhi.

His predecessor, Lt Gen Gurbaksh Singh Sihota, has taken over as chief of the army's Southern Command.

An aviator who served with the air observation post squadron during the 1971 war with Pakistan, Gen Sihota has considerable experience in heading counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir.

Gen Chahal has led a mountain brigade in the insurgency-affected northeastern region and an infantry division along the Line of Control in Jammu & Kashmir.

He also held instructional assignments at the Indian Military Academy and the Defence Services Staff College.

Both generals are highly decorated, with Gen Sihota having received awards for gallantry and distinguished service like the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and the Vir Chakra. Gen Chahal is a recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal.
