India has assured Nepal of speeding up defence supplies like automatic rifles, ammunition, light mountain guns and other military equipment sought by Kathmandu.
The assurance was given to Nepalese Army Chief Gen P S J B Rana when he stopped in New Delhi, cutting short his visit to Europe, and met Indian Army Chief Gen S Padmanabhan, according to highly placed defence sources.
The Nepalese army, which is now involved in a battle to put down the violence by heavily armed cadres of Maoist rebels, has also asked for emergency supply of light helicopters and combat vehicles, including jeeps.
The sources said the Nepalese army chief had requested for speedy supply of military equipment and New Delhi had agreed to it.
