US naval ship to dock in Madras port on Monday

Ramesh Menon in New Delhi

An American naval ship -- USS John Young -- will dock in Madras Port on Monday.

The ship is part of the US Seventh Fleet, and news of its scheduled arrival comes less than three weeks after the visit of USS O'Brien -- the first US naval vessel to visit Madras in more than five years.

USS John Young would refuel and restock, while the crew has been scheduled to visit local sights, and participate in community service projects.

A US embassy release said the visit underscores the increasingly close relationship between India and the United States.

USS John Young is a SPRUANCE class destroyer -- developed primarily for anti-submarine warfare - and belongs to the first class of ships in the US Navy to have gas turbine power.

Commissioned in 1978, the USS John Young has an overall length of 563 feet with a full displacement capacity of 9,153 tonnes.

It has a speed of 30 plus knots. The ship has a crew of 300.
