1 army soldier killed in Pakistani shelling

One Indian Army soldier was killed while another one was seriously wounded in heavy Pakistani shelling in the Lipa valley in Tangdhar sector of northern Kupwara district.

In the retaliatory action, a defence spokesman said, two Pakistani soldiers were killed.

Pakistani troops "fired mortars and RPG rockets from their Karachi post in the Tangdhar sector", he said.

The injured soldier was shifted to a hospital.

"These incidents are hostile acts in clear violation of Clauses 1 and 4 of the Simla Agreement between the two countries," the spokesman added.

He said in response to the firing "the Indian Army exercised its right to take appropriate action and carried out retaliatory strikes using small arms in Haji Peer and Lipa Valley sectors. "Two Pakistani soldiers were killed due to this firing," the spokesman added.

Meanwhile, four militants were killed and an army jawan was injured while security forces arrested three ultras and recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition in separate incidents in the Kashmir valley since Sunday night, the police said.

Two militants were killed and an army jawan was injured in an encounter in Handwara area of Kupwara district. Two AK assault rifles, four grenades and a wireless set were recovered from the slain militants, they said.

In another encounter, they said, troops shot dead two militants at Kathwari in Machil sector of Kupwara on Sunday night. One rifle was recovered from them.

Border Security Force troops smashed a militant hideout belonging to the Al-fatah outfit in Bandipora area of Baramulla district on Monday, the police said, adding a militant was arrested and three AK assault rifles, five magazines with 147 rounds, seven grenades, 11 kg of RDX, 24 detonators, nine time device switches and two wireless antennae were recovered from him.

The army recovered three kg of RDX, four detonators and a grenade from the house of one Ghulam Mohammed Sheikh in Handwara area of Kupwara on Sunday night, they said.
