Explosion leaves five dead in Etah

An explosion in a jeep carrying Diwali crackers left five dead in the Etah district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

According to an official spokesman, the explosion blew up the jeep to shreds killing its five occupants instantaneously.

He said, "The jeep-taxi was on its routine trip from Bhujpura town to Etah city, when a passenger carrying two-gunny bag loads of crackers boarded the vehicle enroute; barely half an hour later, there was sudden explosion, apparently caused on account of a cigarette butt or bidi."

This follows two similar explosions in Agra where six persons had died barely 10 days ago.
