VHP threatens movement for Ram temple

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Saturday threatened to launch a "strong" people's movement from March 1 next year if the Union government failed to give land in Ayodhya for the construction of Ram temple.

There would be no alternative for the Hindus but to fight if the Union government and other political parties failed to take a positive decision over the proposed construction of the Ram temple, international general secretary of VHP Pravin Togadia said.

Replying to a question regarding Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's assertion that the Ayodhya issue would be settled before March 12, Togadia said there did not seem to be any solid basis for this claim.

He said VHP leaders Ashok Singhal and Ram Chandra Paramhans had a meeting with Vajpayee recently. But except that there had been no discussion between the PM and the VHP over the issue, he added.

The VHP, which had prepared a plan to create a movement in 600,000 villages and urban areas in support of the temple, would recruit Ram sevaks to mobilise people from all parts of the country in the next four months to march to Ayodhya, he told reporters.
