Mahanta's wife alleges physical torture by husband

Former Assam chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, who was recently in the thick of a controversy over his alleged second marriage, is now facing another storm with his wife Joyashree lodging a police complaint of physical torture against him.

Joyashree, a Rajya Sabha member, lodged her complaint with the Tughlak Road police station alleging that her husband had beaten her up on Friday night after a domestic altercation, police sources said.

The sources said the complaint did not mention anything about harassment.

She was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital from where she was discharged after first aid, the sources said.

No case has been registered so far as the police are awaiting a medical report to ascertain the nature of the injuries.

"A case can be registered only if the injury is of serious kind," the sources said, adding prima facie nothing of that sort is apparent.

An inquiry is being conducted to ascertain details of the incident.

Mahanta was not available for comments as he left the capital this morning for Guwahati.

Mahanta was recently embroiled in a major controversy after an Assam government employee Sanghamitra Bharali claimed that he had secretly married her in a temple in Bombay early this year.

Although Mahanta had denied it, he had to quit the post of Asom Gana Parishad president in the wake of the controversy.
