Two more turn hostile in
Jessica Lal murder case

T L Garg in New Delhi

Two more prosecution witnesses on Thursday turned hostile in the murder trial of ramp model Jessica Lal, retracting from the statements they had made to the police after the incident.

Manoj Kumar and Balbir Singh are employed in a sugar mill in Karnal, 125 km from here, in which prime accused Manu Sharma is a director.

They had earlier told the police that Sharma usually drove the Tata Safari vehicle in which he is alleged to have made his getaway after the shooting.

On Thursday, they told Additional Sessions Judge R L Chugh that they had "never seen Siddharth Vashist (as Sharma is also known) driving a black-coloured Tata Safari."

They, however, did admit that Sharma was a director of the Piccaddly Agro Industries, where they worked. Manoj Kumar is a driver, while Balbir Singh is a security supervisor in the sugar mill.

Lal was allegedly shot dead by Sharma at the Tamarind Court restaurant on April 29, 1999 after she refused to serve him a drink. Sharma is the son for a former Union minister.

There are nine accused in the case. All of them except Sharma are out on bail.
