Militants Tuesday afternoon made an attempt on the life of Union Industries Minister Omar Abdullah at Nawakadal in downtown Srinagar.
Police said two rifle grenades were fired by militants from a nearby area, towards the women's college at Nawakadal, while Omar was leaving the premises.
"Omar had just left when the grenades landed in the area. He left safely," said a police officer.
He said militants also fired towards the college premises.
Two girl students who received injuries were shifted to hospital.
"He had left the college after attending the function," said a police spokesman.
However, locals said that the grenades exploded one after the other as soon as the minister left the premises.
This was followed by firing from automatics.
Senior police and security force officers rushed to the area, where tight security was in force from early morning in view of the visit of the Union minister, who is also the son of Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah.
The attempt on Omar comes when Prime Minister Atal Bihari's pointman on Kashmir K C Pant is on a week-long visit to the state, meeting groups to "renew his old friendship and create new ones".
The pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen, in a call to a local news agency, claimed responsibility for the attack.
