Rajiv Shah, son of film financier Bharat Shah, was arrested in Bombay on Sunday morning in connection with a brawl between the management of popular night-club Fire 'n' and Ice and some customers.
Rajiv is one of the directors of Fire 'n' Ice.
He was produced before holiday magistrate Yusuf Zai and was remanded to police custody till Monday.
Though none of the senior police officials were available for comment, sources said Rajiv has been charged with attempted murder.
There are two versions about what happened at Fire 'n' Ice on Saturday night. One version says that a customer, whose identity is not yet known, was partying at the club with his brother and girlfriend. Rajiv wanted to dance with the girl, but his request was turned down. Enraged, Rajiv had all three thrown out of the club.
They returned a little later accompanied by the police and Rajiv Shah and some other members of the club's staff were arrested.
According to the second version, some customers arrived at the club in a drunken state and were thrown out by the bouncers. They came back with some more people and a scuffle ensued involving Vishal Shetty and Ketan -- two directors of Fire 'n' Ice.
The N M Joshi Marg police arrived at the scene minutes later and arrested Vishal, Ketan and the troublemakers.
When Rajiv Shah went to the police station in the morning, the policemen allegedly made some remarks about his father. When he objected, Rajiv was manhandled by the policemen and put in a lock-up.
While confirming Rajiv's arrest, a family member said: "Last night some people had an argument at Fire 'n' Ice after consuming liquor which led to a fight. Rajiv being one of the partners of the club was called to the N M Joshi Marg police station. Instead of completing the formalities, the police arrested him. We are waiting for the details."
When rediff.com spoke to producer Mukesh Bhatt, he said that to him the entire episode looked like a big frame-up.
"It suits everyone to believe what the police are saying. But I have only one question: Is the police always right," he said.
"In my opinion all this is a frame-up. Yesterday, Bharat Shah's son Rishab spoke to Zee News in his father's favour and today they have arrested his eldest son. They are basically terrorising the family," he said.
Chat with Mukesh Bhat on Tuesday, 1300 IST.
