Zuwarkar gets further
remand, Godinho freed

Sandesh Prabhudesai in Panaji

Somnath Zuwarkar, former Congress minister and chairman of the Goa State Co-operative Bank, and bank CEO C N Salkar were Tuesday remanded to police custody for seven more days, in connection with a bank scam.

The high court rejected Salkar's bail application while directing Zuwarkar to first approach the district and sessions court. The lower court had earlier rejected Salkar's plea. Zuwarkar's plea, however, will be decided on Wednesday.

The state police had arrested both on May 17, after which they were remanded to five-day police custody. While they challenged the order in higher courts, the police succeeded in seeking further remand for them.

The fraud which they allegedly committed in the apex bank of the state was brought to light by three bank directors. Supporting the move, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar requested the Reserve Bank of India to probe the bank's functioning.

In addition, Co-operation Minister Prakash Velip has sought an assurance from the central registrar of co-operative societies to investigate the bank's state of affairs. The apex bank was granted multi-state status a few years ago.

Former power minister Mauvin Godinho, who was arrested by the state police in a multi-crore power rebate scam, was released on Tuesday morning, following a high court order. He applied for anticipatory bail, fearing arrest in another case.

Though Godinho took shelter in the state hospital from the night of May 17, the police only took him at 03:30 hours on Tuesday to the lock-up. "We had misinterpreted the court order," a police official admitted.
