Advani, Jaswant in Srinagar
for crucial meeting

Union ministers L K Advani and Jaswant Singh will on Saturday attend in Srinagar a crucial meeting of the Unified Command to get an assessment of the ground situation in the Valley.

The visit assumes significance as it comes just about a fortnight ahead of the expiry of the ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir this month-end.

Official sources said that the home minister and the defence minister were unlikely to go to any place in the state other than Srinagar during their day-long visit.

The suggestion that Advani and Singh attend a meeting of the Unified Command had come from J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah.

Favouring extension of the ceasefire, Ministers of State for Home I D Swami had Friday night said that the Cabinet Committee on Security would take a decision in this regard after the conclusion of the visit of the two ministers.

"The Centre has already appointed its interlocutor K C Pant to hold a dialogue with various groups in Kashmir. Some of them have responded positively. Therefore, the ceasefire should be extended to carry the peace process forward," Swami said.
