The Assembly Elections 2001: Kerala

Governor invites Antony to form govt

Kerala Governor S S Kang on Wednesday invited senior Congress leader A K Antony to form the new government.

Antony is likely to be sworn in at 10.45 am on Thursday. Some of his cabinet colleagues would also be sworn in the same day.

Antony called on the governor at the Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram earlier in the day.

Shortly after their meeting, the governor invited him to form the government, Raj Bhavan sources said.

Late last evening, Antony had sent a letter to the governor staking claim to form the government following his election as the head of the Congress Legislature Party and later as the leader of the eight-party United Democratic Front.

UDF constituents had also sent a joint letter to the governor requesting him to invite Antony to form the government.
