AI work hit as drunk customs official 'thrashes' employee

Air India temporarily suspended work at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi in the wee hours of Saturday after one of its employees was 'thrashed' by a customs official, who was allegedly drunk.

The incident took place immediately after midnight when an Air India official J S Rawat, working in the cargo division, was manhandled and thrashed by a customs official, airport sources said.

Following the incident, Air India employees at the prestigious airport suspended work and resorted to slogan shouting besides demanding an apology from the erring customs official, the sources said.

The matter was resolved only after the customs official submitted a written apology for his conduct.

Air India employees resumed work around 0300 hours after senior customs officials assured that action would be taken against the erring official, the sources said.

However, when contacted, senior customs officials refused to comment.

Police had also rushed inside the airport complex to prevent any unruly scene.
