SC rejects Chandra Swami's
plea for going abroad

The Supreme Court Friday dismissed a petition filed by self-styled godman Chandra Swami, accused in St Kitts forgery case, seeking permission from the court to go abroad for medical treatment.

When the court said that there was no merit in the petition, the counsel for Chandra Swami wished to withdraw the petition and a bench comprising Justices B N Kirpal, D P Mohapatra and R P Sethi dismissed it as withdrawn.

Arguing for Chandra Swami, Counsel G L Sanghi contended that as per medical advice, his client needed urgent treatment abroad. He cited the doctors' certificate.

Appearing for the Central Bureau of Investigation, Additional Solicitor General Kirit Raval said there were few foreign witnesses whose examination was yet to be done by the trial court.

Raval said that as a team of doctors from the All India Institute for Medical Sciences had felt that the ailment of Chandra Swami could be treated in India, the motive to go abroad could be surmised to be to influence the witnesses.
