Sex scandal shocks Maharashtra town

Twenty people have been arrested in connection with sexual exploitation of girls in Satara in Maharashtra by a gang which promised them a break in Bollywood.

Replying to a calling attention notice by Anil Babar of the Nationalist Congress Party in the state assembly on Friday, Minister of State for Home Manikrao Thakre said the matter came to light after it was reported by local newspapers on March 21.

Pruthviraj Chavan, Sanjay Pawar and Mrudula Vanarase, who ran a film production company -- Shrinath Cine Pvt Ltd -- lured young girls promising them roles in Hindi films, the minister said.

The trio would take obscene photographs of the girls and then blackmail them, Thakre added.

A total of six girls have so far lodged complaints with the police after they were promised anonymity.

A woman officer of the rank of police superintendent is investigating the case, the minister said.
