Case against George 'ill-timed', says VHP

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad said on Friday that the filing of a corruption case by the Central Bureau of Investigation against Vincent George, personal secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, soon after the Tehelka expose was "ill-timed" and would send a wrong message to the people.

"The CBI should have done it earlier or later. I am not saying it was deliberate, but the timing was wrong. People feel that it was in retaliation for Tehelka," VHP vice-president Giriraj Kishore told the Press Trust of India.

"There should be an end to mutual mudslinging," he said.

Earlier, addressing reporters, Kishore said that while tehelka.com had certainly highlighted the shortcomings in the administration, by going public it had committed an "unpardonable crime" which would serve to benefit Pakistan's nefarious designs by crippling the government and demoralising its armed forces.

"National interest should be above everything else. The Web site could have brought the matter to the notice of the authorities," he said, adding that he agreed with the conspiracy theory propounded by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Asked about disgraced former BJP president Bangaru Laxman's RSS origins, he shot back, "Are not swayamsewaks [the RSS cadres] human? In a university, it is not necessary that all students make the mark. Human weaknesses can be found everywhere, in every organisation."

"Due to his RSS background, at least he [Laxman] was honest to admit that he had taken the money, unlike others," Kishore remarked.
