Clinton to visit Calcutta

The objective of the delegation, which would also visit New Delhi and other major cities, is to harness the management expertise, financial resources and entrepreneurship of the Indian community in the USA to 'benefit India in its hour of need', an AIF release in Calcutta said.

"The devastating earthquake in Gujarat promoted the idea of such a foundation. I am honoured to serve on the AIF board," Clinton was quoted as saying in the release.

The delegation would first visit Gujarat to get a first hand view of the extent of the damage and would interact with government officials and NGOs.

"AIF aims to improve the social and community infrastructure in India by working for the rehabilitation of Gujarat in the short term and becoming a role model for long term projects across the country," the release said, adding, AIF would provide assistance in shelter reconstruction and enhancing the livelihood of the people of Gujarat.

AIF has organised several fund-raisers to be addressed by Clinton during the visit. Pop diva Jennifer Lopez and rap star M C Hammer would perform live in the functions, it said.

Prominent Indo-Americans in the AIF include Sabeer Bhatia, Deepak Chopra, Rohit Desai, Naren Gupta, Kailash Joshi, Dr Navin Mehta, Victor Menzes, Mike Patel, Prof C K Prahlad, Dr Bhimsen Rao and Krishna Srinivasa.
