JD (U) to go alone in assembly polls in five states

Having received lukewarm response from other partners of the National Democratic Alliance, Janata Dal (United) on Thursday said it would go alone in the forthcoming assembly elections in five states.

"We have decided to go alone as we don't want to create problems for other alliance partners by asking for seats from them," JD (U) spokesman Mohan Prakash told reporters here.

He said the party had identified 30 out of 294 seats in West Bengal and as many seats out of 234 in Tamil Nadu, where as out of 126 seats in Assam, the party had identified 25.

In Kerala, the JD (U) intended to contest ten to 15 of the 141 seats and ten of the 30 seats in Pondicherry, he said.

Mohan Prakash said the idea behind contesting the elections in these states was to rejuvenate the workers as also to gauge the electoral prospects of the party in these states.

To a question, he said the party would try to minimise division of anti-Left Front votes in West Bengal where the Congress and Trinamul propose to share seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party is going alone.
