Mahanta meets Basu, Buddhadev on People's Front

Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta Wednesday stressed the need for strengthening People's Front, launched recently under the leadership of the former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu to counter the National Democratic Alliance at the Centre.

Mahanta, who called on his West Bengal counterpart Buddhadev Bhattacharjee at the latter's office in Calcutta, had a primary discussion about the possible development in this regard, while he urged Bhattacharjee for revival of good relations between the Assom Gana Parishad and the Left Front.

Mahanta later visited Basu's residence to discuss the matter.

Talking to newsmen at the state secretariat after his meeting with Bhattacharjee, Mahanta said his party believed in maintaining equi-distance from both from the BJP and Congress.

Mahanta, who "expressed confidence in returning to power in the forthcoming elections", said the improved relations between the AGP and the Left Front would help improve various issues of common interest effectively.
