US wants to further
improve ties with India

The United States has said relations with India have been "very good" and it intends to further improve them.

"US relations with India have been very good and we intend to further improve them," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher told reporters in Washington on Tuesday.

He was commenting on the first meeting between new Indian Ambassador Lalit Mansingh and Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Mansingh met Powell to present him a copy of his credentials.

On United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan's visit to India, Boucher said the US was informed of it and obviously watched it very closely.

"I don't think we have anything new to say on policy," he said. "Our policy has not changed."
