India negotiating with Russia for missile guidance technology

India and Russia are negotiating sale of an advanced ballistic missile guidance technology which would radically improve the accuracy of Indian weapons, a defence weekly reported.

The system on offer, the Defence Week said, is an highly sensitive electro-optical guided missile warhead.

It said that Russian officials claim the new seeker can improve Scud accuracy from landing within a 900-1,000 metre radius of the target to within a 20-40 metre radius.

The weekly quoted an unnamed US official as saying: "They (Russia) would certainly have the ultimate sovereign authority to make such an export."

"We would not regard it as a good thing to do, because it means promoting missile proliferation."
