Pakistan to maintain minimum deterrence

Pakistani military ruler General Pervez Musharraf said Pakistan would maintain a minimum level of deterrence to ensure its security.

"We will maintain the deterrence to such a level that will ensure the country's security," he was quoted as saying by the official APP news agency at the end of a week of exercises by the Pakistan Air Force.

"We are proud of this air force which has proved its mettle," he said.

Praising the role played by PAF in the last two wars against India, he said PAF was also responsible for training several air forces of different countries.

PAF carried out a missile firing display at Sonmiani firing range near Karachi on Monday.

The exercises were conducted with live ammunition to test operational readiness, official reports here said.

During the exercises, PAF used various types of aircraft which fired live air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles on dummy targets.

Musharraf said Pakistan would maintain its current defence spending as it did not want to provoke an arms race with India.
