Polls in October 2002: Musharraf

General Pervez Musharraf announced on Sunday that party-based general elections would be held in Pakistan around October 2002.

At a news conference at Governor's House in Karachi, he stated that he would not retire in October, but evaded a question on whether his elevation to presidency was part of a political restructuring plan.

While reiterating that the government would abide by the decisions of the Supreme Court, he, however, noted that whatever time was at his disposal was short.

"When the time comes, you will know it. Many things have to be discussed," he said.

He stressed that provincial and national elections would be on party-basis as ''it is in Pakistan's interest to have national parties''.

He maintained that Army had no vendetta against any political party.

He made it clear that Pakistan was not in the arms race with India but would maintain the minimum deterrence level.
