Militants attacked the house of a leader of the Awami League, a political organisation of reformed militants, while two Hizbul Mujahideen militants, a BSF jawan and a Special Police Officer were killed and two others wounded in the Kashmir valley since Sunday night, an official spokesman said on Monday.

He said a group of unidentified militants opened fire on the house of Ghulam Nabi Ratanpuri at Gabarpora in Pulwama district of south Kashmir late on Sunday night.

Police guards posted at the house fired back forcing militants to retreat, the spokesman said, adding none was hurt in the shootout, which lasted for over an hour.

Ratanpuri was present inside the house at the time of the attack, official sources said.

The spokesman said militants shot dead SPO Mohammad Sidiq Khan at Duban-Malangam in Bandipora area of Baramulla district in north Kashmir late on Sunday night and also attacked a security picket near Tral police station in Pulwama district of south Kashmir with rifle grenades wounding a jawan.

Unidentified gunmen abducted a civilian, Ghulam Jeelani Naik, from Nowshera locality of downtown Srinagar on Sunday evening. Naik, a resident of Khanyar, was taken to an unknown destination by his abductors, he said.

Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants and a BSF jawan were killed in a fierce encounter in Pulwama district of south Kashmir late on Sunday night, a BSF spokesman said on Monday.

Three residential houses were also gutted in the gunbattle, which broke out when a BSF party was fired upon by Hizbul Mujahideen militants during a specific raid on their hideout at village Dadoor near Wudwan in Pulwama district on Sunday evening, the spokesman said.

He said BSF troops came under heavy fire from a group of Hizbul Mujahideen militants during a search of a house in the village resulting in the death of a BSF jawan.

The BSF party retaliated and in the ensuing encounter which lasted till late Sunday night, two Hizbul Mujahideen militants identified as Nazir Ahmad and Hilal Ahmad were killed and three houses gutted, the spokesman said.

A civilian, Ali Mohammad Bhat was also injured in the shootout, official sources said. Two assault rifles and a large quantity of ammunition and some grenades were recovered from the possession of the deceased militants, a BSF spokesman said.

Meanwhile, curfew was reinforced in Baramulla old town after being relaxed for a brief period on the fourth day on Monday following violent clashes between police and protestors in which three persons, including two policemen, were injured, official sources said in Srinagar.

Police also arrested seven persons, resorted to a baton charge and fired warning shots to bring the situation under control, they said.

The trouble erupted on Monday morning when after relaxation in curfew, people of over a dozen localities of old town Baramulla took to the streets protesting the death of a youth when CRPF personnel on Friday fired at a stone-pelting mob protesting the alleged desecration of a copy of the holy Quran in Amritsar, the sources said.

Police personnel intervened resulting in clashes between the angry mobs and the cops, they said, adding two policemen and a civilian were injured in the clashes.

Policc burst tear gas shells and resorted to a lathicharge when efforts to disperse stone-pelting mobs proved ineffective, the sources said.

Sensing trouble, the authorities immediately reimposed curfew in the old town, they said adding the situation was tense but under control.
