Man sentenced to 10 years' RI for raping infant

A factory worker has been sentenced to ten years' rigorous imprisonment by a Bombay court for raping a nine-month-old girl.

Vishnu Mourya (35) was convicted for kidnapping the infant from his neighbouring house and then sexually molesting her. He was sentenced to two years jail on charge of kidnapping and sentenced to 10 years RI for raping the victim. Both the sentences would run concurrently.

The verdict, delivered recently by sessions judge, Laxmi Rao, is significant because it is one of the rare cases where there was no eye witness and the victim was too small to give a statement.

The prosecution, led by Derhina Cooper, relied upon the statements of victim's mother and her neighbours as well as on the medical report which confirmed that the child was sexually molested.

The FIR was lodged by police inspector V B Chandanshive.

Mourya, a married man with three children, was staying alone in the city with his family away in Rajasthan. The victim was Mourya's neighbour in suburban Andheri.

Two years back, Mourya took the girl to his footware factory with the permission of her mother. Finding a solitary corner, Mourya raped the child and subsequently brought her home.
