Criminal complaint against
suspended Gujarat MLAs

A criminal complaint was registered against seven opposition Congress members of the Gujarat assembly for ransacking Speaker Dhirubhai Shah's chamber on Thursday, police said.

The members were protesting against suspension of eight of their colleagues, including the leader of the Opposition, Amarsinh Chaudhary.

The members were suspended for "lowering the image of the legislature and showing disrespect to the chair," a statement from the speaker's office said.

Chaudhary was suspended after he refused to apologise for his statement which alleged that BJP ministers and MLAs had cornered relief material meant for quake victims.

Meanwhile, police intervened on Friday to remove blockades put up by slogan shouting Congress MLAs at several places in the state capital.

Earlier, speaking to reporters, Chaudhary described the suspension of eight of his colleagues as 'undemocratic.'

Chaudhary maintained that the government had failed to provide succour to the quake-affected people and that foreign relief material had been grabbed by the wrong people.
