The Vishwa Hindu Parishad made a scathing attack on Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday, calling her "anti-Hindu" for her recent statement against the construction of a Ram temple at Ayodhya.
"Gandhi's remarks at the Bangalore conclave of the Congress have hurt the feelings of 100 crore Hindus the world over," the organisation said.
"By referring to the Ram Janambhoomi as Babri Masjid, she has not only attacked a subject of faith of Hindu society, but also acted against her husband, the late Rajiv Gandhi, who gave permission for shilanyas at the site," VHP working president Ashok Singhal said in New Delhi.
The VHP offensive comes close on the heels of the BJP's attack on Gandhi after the Central Bureau of Investigation registered a case against her private secretary, Vincent George, for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
The Congress, while supporting the temple's construction, maintains that it should not be built at the disputed site.
The party, Singhal alleged, "has now strongly entrenched itself into the fold of anti-Hindu forces in the country. It has equated itself with the decision of Babur in 1528 when he destroyed the temple and snatched away the right of worship from Hindu society at that very place."
He reiterated the Sangh Parivar's resolve to build the temple "at the very place Lord Ram was born".
Stating that a "deep-rooted conspiracy" was behind the communal disturbances in many parts of the country coupled with the tehelka.com expose, he asked the government to crush "anti-national forces" with an iron hand, "lest people take the law into their hands".
