BJP attacks Sonia on George issue

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday launched a scathing attack on Congress president Sonia Gandhi seeking an explanation why Vincent George, against whom the Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a case, continues to be her personal assistant.

"Congress owes an explanation to the nation as to how Gandhi continues to have Vincent George as her personal assistant after CBI has registered a case against him for possessing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income," party spokesman V K Malhotra told reporters in New Delhi.

The Congress, instead of disrupting Parliamentary proceedings demanding resignation of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the wake of "baseless" corruption charges, should seek the resignation of its president Sonia Gandhi, Malhotra said.

To a question whether BJP wanted her to resign, he said: "If she continues as Congress President, it suits us."

Malhotra said serious charges have been levelled by the CBI against George, who had also been associated with former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

"Sonia Gandhi needs to explain how such a corrupt person was working for her for the last ten years", he said.
