Security beefed up as VHP gears to
perform 'puja' near Delhi mosque

Security at the Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid in New Delhi has been beefed up in the wake of threats from some Hindu outfits to perform Yajna (religious ritual) on Tuesday before an 'ancient' idol of Lord Ganesha in the premises of a historic mosque, which they claim was built after razing many shrines.

Deputy Commissioner of Police P Kamraj told PTI that 'adequate arrangements' have been made to prevent any untoward incident at the complex located near the historic Qutub Minar.

Sources in the Sangh Parivar-backed Devsthan Mukti Yajna Samiti, organising the programme, said hundreds of religious heads and activists led by senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders Mahant Naval Kishore Das and Om Prakash Singhal would conduct the Yajna at the 'Vishnu Dhwaja Mandir'.

The Sangh Parivar outfit's move follows refusal by the Archaeological Survey of India to allow 'puja' before the idol.

Several VHP activists were arrested on November 14 when they tried to perform 'puja' near the mosque, built in 1100 AD after allegedly razing to the ground 27 Jain and Hindu temples.

The Samiti had submitted a memorandum to ASI Director General Komal Anand seeking permission to perform 'puja' at the spot on the plea that Muslims were being allowed to offer 'namaz' in the Mosque.

Anand had recently written to the Samiti denying that any worship was being allowed in the complex.

After the Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya, Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura and Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi, this is the fourth major shrine whose possession the Parivar is seeking.
