Pirated cassettes of Lagaan, Gadar seized

Over 3000 pirated video cassettes of Lagaan, Gadar and several unreleased popular English films, worth Rs 300,000, were seized by the police from a godown at Dongri in central Bombay on Friday.

Cassettes and compact disks of English films, including yet to be released Pearl Harbour, were recovered by the police.

Acting on a tip-off from the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association that a rampant piracy operation was being stealthily conducted from a godown at Dongri, police raided the place on Thursday evening and seized the cassettes.

A youth, Rajesh Galla, was arrested and produced before a local court. The court remanded him to police custody till Saturday.

Galla had earlier carried out a similar piracy operation at Lamington Road but shifted base following stepping up of police vigilance in the area.

The increasing piracy in the city had resulted in huge revenue losses to the government and the film industry, IMPA sources said.
