A team of more than 2,000 men will launch a manhunt for forest brigand Veerappan on Thursday, senior Tamil Nadu officials said.
Veerappan has evaded the law for more than 30 years and is accused of committing more than 100 murders, apart from sandalwood and elephant tusk smuggling.
"The morale is pretty high because this time we are using men who have volunteered for the task and are highly motivated," a senior police officer said.
The forest brigand hit the headlines last year when he kidnapped film icon Dr Rajakumar and held him hostage for 108 days.
Earlier this month, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha called "supercop" Walter Dawaram out of retirement in a bid to nab the elusive brigand. Dawaram is known in police circles for his unorthodox methods.
