The Russian-built missile witnessed a perfect vertical take-off from a specially designed launcher erected at the launch complex (LC-3) at the ITR at 1017 hours, the sources said.
The 6.9 metre high missile, capable of carrying multiple warheads, can hit a target of about 280 km within 300 seconds.
The missile was totally guided by an on-board computer and used liquid and solid propellants in its two-stage system, the sources said.
Union Defence Minister Jaswant Singh, scientific advisor to the defence ministry V K Atre, about 200 scientists and engineers of the Defence Research and Development Organisation and 60 Russian defence experts were present at the test-firing.
Various components of the missile had been flown in from Russia, in a huge transport plane last month, and were assembled at the ITR, the sources said.
The missile is designed as an anti-ship weaponry system, the sources said, adding that the sophisticated guided system helped it in desired manoeouvring and sea skimming exercises on its trajectory.
