The siege of the Shangus mosque in the south Kashmir district of Anantnag ended early on Monday morning after sharpshooters of the elite National Security Guards shot dead all six militants hiding inside.
One Army soldier was killed and two others injured in the operation, during which a portion of the mosque was damaged, a senior police officer said.
"The NSG commandos mounted an attack around 3.30 am and killed all six militants. The mosque was subsequently searched and the bodies recovered," he said.
While senior Army officials said the militants were not able to put up much of a resistance, police sources said there was a heavy exchange of fire before the six Lashkar-e-Tayiba fidayeens could be eliminated.
NSG commandos were rushed to Shangus late on Sunday night after a 24-hour siege of the mosque.
