Three policemen were killed and four other persons, including a civilian, were seriously injured on Sunday in a surprise attack by the outlawed People's War Group on Eturnagaram police station in the Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh.
According to a state police spokesman, about 100 armed PWG Naxalites attacked the Eturnagaram police station - located about 250 kms northeast of Hyderabad - with claymour mines, grenades and crude bombs.
The police retaliated, and the exchange of fire between the policemen holed up in the police station and the armed extremists continued for nearly half an hour.
Two Central Reserve Police Force jawans died in the naxalite attack.
One civil constable died of electrocution when a power line snapped and fell on the wire fencing of the police station.
Four others - two civil police constables, a forest guard and a priest - sustained serious injuries in the naxalite attack.
The injured persons have been shifted to Kamalapur hospital.
