Two Sri Lankan Air Force personnel have been detained for questioning for allegedly ignoring a tip-off from a resident living in the vicinity of the Colombo International Airport about a suspicious sack containing tools and materials.
Police believe the tools and materials could have been used by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam suicide squad that attacked the airport and the military airbase on Tuesday.
The resident had spotted the sack and asked the airmen men to inspect its contents the night before the attack, and they had found that it contained some screwdrivers, some clothes and tools.
However, they had considered the contents insignificant, and asked the man carrying it to take them if he wished.
They have now been detained in the airbase for questioning.
Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigation Department continued questioning some suspects who could be linked to the vehicle that was used by the LTTE squad to arrive at the vicinity of the airport.
Apart from three men alleged to be involved in the routine movement of the vehicle, an unspecified number of others have also been detained on suspicion. But nobody has been formally accused of involvement in the plot.
