Musharraf relives his childhood in Daryaganj

President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan visited his ancestral house in the Naherwali Haveli in Delhi's Daryaganj area on Saturday evening. He came along with his wife Begum Sehba Musharraf and Pakistan's High Commissioner Ashraf Jehangir Qazi.

Shoaib Iqbal, the Congress legislator of Daryaganj, and Vijay Goel, the Bharatiya Janata Party member of Parliament from Chandni Chowk, also accompanied him.

The haveli, a part of which the Musharrafs occupied till 1946 before migrating to Karachi to be a part of the new state of Pakistan, was painted and the walls were covered with white cloth. Professor B Lal, who has written a book on the history of the haveli, showed the president around the house in which he spent the first four years of his life.

Musharraf, wearing a casual blue shirt and trousers, was looking very relaxed. After the short tour, he sat on a cot, which was laid out for him.

At this point, residents and local administration proceeded to shower him with gifts.

Later in the evening, when the president will be attending the banquet at Rashtrapati Bhavan, a mushaira, in which poets from both countries will participate, will be held just across the haveli.
