Iran wants Musharraf to discuss gas project with India

Iran has urged Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf to take up the proposed US $8 billion Indo-Iran Gas Pipeline project in his talks with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Syed Mohammad Hosein Adeli met Musharraf on Tuesday and delivered a letter from Iranian President Syed Mohammad Khatami requesting the military ruler to discuss the proposed 2670-km overland gas pipeline, which will pass through Pakistan, with Vajpayee at their Agra summit.

Adeli also held talks with Pakistan Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar and Petroleum Minister Usman Aminuddin.

A Pakistani official on Wednesday said, "from the meetings, I think the issue will definitely come on the agenda."

Adeli told Musharraf that India has agreed to pursue the proposed project and sought his help in finalising its future during his India visit.

Interestingly, a high-level Indian delegation is currently in Iran discussing the modalities to commission a feasibility study of the project.
