Vajpayee to gift Husain's painting to Musharraf

Noted painter Maqbool Fida Husain has done an exclusive painting depicting his pet theme of horses and highlighting a peace message to be presented by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to the Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf.

"The Prime Minister asked me to do a painting for the Pakistani President and so I did it," Husain said.

He added that his painting conveys a message of peace.

The noted painter said that the painting shows two horses - one in saffron reins and the other in green - and they denote India and Pakistan respectively.

Husain added that in the painting a bird holds the reins of the two horses with an olive branch in its beak pointing towards the sky.

"Usually the image of a bird or a lotus is used to signify peace," he said, noting that "the horses' white colour also signifies purity and peace."

A quote from Arabic is also written in the canvas conveying the meaning of peace, knowledge and friendship, he said.

Asked for his comments on the Agra summit, Husain said, "I have already expressed my feelings in the painting. Apart from that, we should always hope as without hope, the world cannot go on."

It is not for the first time that Husain's painting is being gifted to a foreign leader. Former US Presidents Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan are among those who were presented with Husain's paintings.
