3000 Pak soldiers died in Kargil: Benazir

Some 3,000 Pakistani servicemen died in the 1999 conflict in Kargil, former prime minister Benazir Bhutto has said, rubbishing General Pervez Musharraf's claim that the Pakistani establishment was not involved in the confrontation.

In an interview to Gulf Today from London, Bhutto said post-mortem reports of many of the servicemen showed that they had been eating grass because the service lines were cut and they were abandoned.

In another interview to Khaleej Times, she described Gen Musharraf as "the architect of the Kargil conflict".

Sarcastically, she added that Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee would welcome him with gifts of Kashmiri handicrafts at their summit in Agra.

Gen Musharraf was Pakistan's army chief during the Kargil conflict while Nawaz Sharief was prime minister.

Pakistan had denied the involvement of its troops in the conflict even as India maintained that the intruders in the sensitive area were actually Pakistani soldiers.
