Damaged buildings to be demolished in Ahmedabad

The problem of people rendered homeless by the January 26 earthquake will be compounded further with the local authorities deciding to demolish all the severely damaged buildings in Ahmedabad.

"So far we have identified 17 buildings in Ahmedabad city which have been declared unsafe for living and they would be demolished," S K Nanda, state revenue secretary, told PTI Tuesday.

One high-risk building was demolished in the Satellite area of the city Monday night, he added.

To a question, whether the army was using explosives to demolish the buildings which have developed cracks, he said, "That has been totally left to them. The army will decide which and what techniques should they use and where."

Nearly 50 high-rise buildings, most of which have come up in and around the city in the last one decade, had collapsed due to the earthquake, leaving over 700 people dead.
