Vajpayee to visit Bhuj on Monday

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will be visiting the earthquake devastated Bhuj town on Monday, where more than 15,000 people are feared dead and thousands still trapped in the debris. Reports from Delhi said he has left the national capital for Gujarat.

The administration rescued 250 persons on Sunday while 30-40,000 people have been injured in the worst earthquake in the last 50 years, DIG, border range, A K Singh said. People with serious injuries are being taken to hospitals in Indore, Rajkot and Pune.

The Army has engaged three columns of Bombay Safire, he said, adding another battalion of infantry would be joining the relief work later in the day.

Foreign relief teams have started operation and a German team consisting of 27 persons and six sniffer dogs and armed with modern gadgets like life-sensors, electric hammer and stone saw is already engaged in relief work on a war footing. The UN, ICRC and Swiss teams are also arriving on Monday.

Two inspectors have died as the police headquarters were destroyed in the quake, Deputy Collector R J Palariya said.

He said it was not possible for people to live in their houses, and that massive reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts would be needed.

Meanwhile, deputy collector of Gandhidham, S K Rathore, has said there were reports of a gas pipeline bursting in Kandla, following which the port has suspended all operations.
