Dalai Lama opposes conversions

Sharat Pradhan at Kumbh Nagar in Allahabad

The head of the Tibetan Democratic Republic (in exile), the Dalai Lama, Thursday came out against conversions.

The 14th reincarnate of Lord Buddha, who was here on an invitation of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, had a one-hour dialogue with Jayendra Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of Kanchi Kamkoti, following which they passed a resolution to oppose conversions.

The resolution said, "We oppose conversions by any religious tradition using various methods of enticement."

Earlier, the Dalai Lama described conversions as "out of date". He said, "Whether it is conversion to Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam , Christianity or any other faith, it is wrong. Everyone must follow one's traditions and change of belief is not proper."

On what he felt about voluntary conversions by individuals, he observed, "Well, even when individuals change their religions on their own, they eventually face many problems.''
